The Perfect Bath

Looking for the ultimate indulgence without a day spa price tag?

Sight: Candle-light transforms a room faster than anything else on the planet. Break out your favourite candles, or treat yourself to a few new ones. Just place the candles in secure locations around the room, turn off the overhead light and you're already well on your way to luxury.

Smell: This is where your favourite bubble bath, bath bombs or salts come in. If you're using a strong scent in the tub make sure it co-ordinates with your candle choices or switch to basic unscented tea-lights. Don't be stingy with the bubble bath remember this is all about indulgence.

Sound: Grab a portable stereo and your favourite soothing CD. Make sure you place the stereo far away from the tub to avoid electrocution and let the soothing sounds fill the room. A good jazz CD works well. If you're looking for something classical, try a CD with Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Taste: Often overlooked, taste adds a very satisfying element to a great soak. Pour yourself a refreshing drink or a soothing cup of cocoa or go all out and bring a dish of chocolate covered strawberries with you. Just make sure you keep everything out of the water and resist the urge to rest the cup on the side of the tub where it can easily be knocked over.

Touch: Just being in warm water fills this requirement but you can add to it by running your hands through the bubbles and having lots of thick, warm towels on hand for when you're done.

Now all you have to do is turn off the phone, put a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the bathroom door and start running the water. Enjoy.

Help For Dry,Winter Skin

Winter skin is dry skin. As the air temperature drops, so does the humidity and you feel the difference in that dry, itchy skin. There are a few simple things you can do to protect yourself, and help your skin:

  1. Bathe in warm water, not hot. Coming in from the cold it's tempting to take a really hot, really long shower, but your skin will suffer for it. Hot water strips your skin of moisture, bathe in warm water or for shorter periods of time to compensate. The American Academy of Dermatologists suggests limiting showers to no more than 10-15 min.

  2. Use a mild soap. Avoid antibacterial or deodorant soaps. Don't wash your face in the morning, washing at night is sufficient to cleanse impurities without over-drying.

  3. Apply a moisturizer while the skin is still wet. This applies to your hands as well as your face. Moisturizing while the skin is wet helps to trap moisture in. If your hands get particularly dry in winter, keep some lotion by the sink and moisturize every time you wash.

  4. Protect your skin when you go outside. Exposed skin suffers in winter so cover up as much as you can. Gloves, scarves, hats, and mufflers will keep you warm and your skin will thank you. Don't forget that your skin is still at risk from sun damage during the winter so make sure your lip balm has an SPF of at least 15 and use it liberally.

  5. Don't forget your lips. Lips are sensitive skin and often exposed to
the sun. Make sure your lip balm has an SPF of at least 15 and use it liberally.

Everyone knows about the need to protect your skin with sunscreen, but once you get home there are still a few things you can do to protect yourself from dry, itchy skin.

Make-Up for Mature Skin

Your skin changes with age, so your make-up should too. Our beauty experts have some great advice to keep you looking your best at any age:

for skin Skin loses its elasticity over time and begins to dry out with the onset of menopause so it's more important that ever to use a moisturizer or moisturizing products. Choose one that's formulated for your skin type.

for eyes Dark, heavy eye make-up accentuates lines and wrinkles and can make droopy eyelids sag. Try a lighter shade of your favorite color and an eye pencil in place of eye liner to soften the look.

for brows and eyelashes Brows and eyelashes thin with age. Using a brown mascara instead black will define your lashes without overwhelming them.

for lips Pink and brown shades are more flattering on lips than deep maroons, matte finishes tend to work better than glossies.

The right make-up can take years off your look so experiment with a few things. Finding what's best for you is half the fun.

Keeping Your Body Beautiful

Many people don't realize the important functions their skin performs. It enables you to sense temperature, touch and texture. It helps keep your body temperature normal and prevents dehydration of internal organs. It is also your body's first line of defence against environmental elements that could threaten your health.

According to Carol Rennehan, Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics, Ltd., "How good your facial and body skin looks and how healthy it is depends, to a great degree, on three factors: how you've cared for it, how aware you are of factors, like the sun, that affect it and lastly, how you've dealt with any skin problems."

Basic body care is a natural extension of basic skin care. But body skin differs from facial skin, and so it has different needs.

Three easy steps form the foundation of your basic body care routine: exfoliating, or buffing twice a week to remove the dry, dead cells on the skin's surface; cleansing, to remove the dirt and perspiration that accumulate over the course of the day; and moisturizing to help keep body skin soft and smooth. "As a rule, the skin on your body has fewer sebaceous glands than the skin on your face, so it is more vulnerable to dryness, "so moisturizing is very important."

And of course, always use a sun protection product to protect against the sun's harmful rays.

You Can Have Beautiful Skin

With new research, new products and new skin protection advice popping up all the time, it is hard to figure out the best things to do to improve and protect your skin. A skin care program is the combination of skin care products and a routine that will be most beneficial to the skin. You will first need to consider your diet and lifestyle since these two factors play an important role in the health of a person's skin.

These days we seem to be living in the fast-food age and the condition of your skin is often neglected. You still can't beat the old fruit and vegetable diet when it comes to good health and a good complexion.

Remember to feed and nourish your skin by eating the proper foods. Give your skin a drink too. Those eight glasses of water a day your mom always told you to be sure to drink are essential to maintaining your skin's elasticity and suppleness, say experts. And don't count coffee or any of the caffeinated sodas as part of the eight glasses because caffeine is dehydrating. The water you choose can be sparkling water, mineral or straight from the tap. Another suggestion is that you keep a litre-size bottle close at hand, or simply drink a glass or two with your meals, and a few in between.

You need to give some thought and consideration to the type of makeup you use. And be sure to clean your tools regularly. Things such as cosmetic brushes get dirty and can carry bacteria and germs and may cause skin irritations and breaking out. One of the leading cosmetic authorities suggests that cosmetic brushes be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a month. A good way is to soak brushes for about 10 minutes in a dish of warm, soapy water using mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo. Rinse and blot excess moisture with a towel and stand the brushes, handle end down, in a tall glass until they are thoroughly dry.

Keep environmental pollutants from being absorbed into the skin with a good moisturizer that also acts as a skin barrier. Check the labels for those with added Vitamin A, C and E, which help block the penetration of pollutants.

A good exercise program such as aerobics can activate and rejuvenate the skin and improve circulation and blood flow. Also, body sweat triggers production of sebum, which is the skin's own natural moisturizer.

One skin care expert has come up with a do-it-yourself version of a treatment you may like to try. Stir the juice of half a lemon into one cup of plain yogurt. Keep it in the refrigerator and apply it as you would a cream every night before bed. You can even apply a thin coat of moisturizer over it is you like, after waiting about five minutes for the yogurt mixture to penetrate. With consistent use, you should see more even pigmentation and smoother skin in three to four weeks.

Get serious about stress reduction. Skin conditions such as acne appear on many people who are stressed out, and chronic skin conditions then to get worse. Set aside quiet time to meditate or daydream. Be sure to get enough sleep. To avoid morning eye or facial puffiness, sleep on your back so fluid doesn't collect there. And, you can keep the oil from your hair away from your face by wearing a head covering or a soft headband when you go to bed. Keep in mind that too much stress can affect your overall health as well as your complexion.

Skin Care From the Inside Out

Beauty in a bottle? It is the promise of the skin care industry and sometimes the substance of our hope. One walk past the sleek cosmetic counters, and it is hard not to buy into the hype.

But are expensive products really the ticket to more beautiful skin?
Hardly. Take it from someone who is the face advertising the products, the bottom line on top beauty advice is to take care of your skin like you are going to be in it awhile! Here are some strategies that really work to help your skin stay healthy and younger looking.

Moister, More Supple Skin - How to Really Get Hydrated!

Did you know that the absolute best way to moisturize your skin is to actually drink the recommended amount of water everyday? The best that you can hope for in the store bought moisturizer is to help hold in the moisture that your skin already has. Your best bet: moisturize where it counts, from within.

Don't forget these pointers.

  • Three tall drinking glasses full of water will just about meet your daily need for 1.5 liters or 64 ounces of water.

  • Reduce carbonated beverages, tea, and coffee to about 2-3 servings a day. Less is better if possible. They act as diuretics and make you lose the water you are drinking.

  • Keep alcohol intake to a minimum. Staying in the range of about 1 or 2 drinks a week will help your skin maintain its moisture

Don't Just Fight Wrinkles- Help Prevent Them

When it comes to sun exposure and its damaging effects on your skin, the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is wisdom worth heeding. The truth is that the number one way to avoid premature aging and wrinkles is to avoid the sun. It sounds so simple, but that is the real beauty to it. Relying on expensive products to cure what you can prevent is no way to treat your skin. Here's advice that will help you reduce your chances of premature aging related to sun exposure.

  • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays with a SPF of 15 or higher.

  • Wear your sunscreen everyday regardless of the weather. UVA rays, the most damaging to your skin, are just as strong on cloudy days and sunny ones.

  • Many inexpensive moisturizers now come with a broad spectrum, SPF 15 sunscreen. Apply liberally to entire face and don't forget your neck and ears.

Skin Care Regimens- Whatever You Do, Do it Gently

Between the exfoliants and the toners, the pore strips, and the retinols, what is really best for your skin? Gentle consideration for your skin is a good place to start. Good technique in your skin care regimen and careful attention to the ingredients you are putting on your face will go a long way in giving your skin the care that it really needs.

  • Avoid skin care products with perfumes and alcohol. Look for products that are labeled specifically as alcohol free. Alcohol is extremely drying and perfumes have no place on your face; they can be irritating.

  • Use cotton balls or pads to cleanse your face. Tissue has wood fibers that can damage skin.

  • Cleanse skin and apply makeup with care. Excessive rubbing, pulling, scrubbing breaks down skin's elasticity contributing to sagging skin.
